HANUNUO
Ø
HanunoMangyans can be found within the
territorical jurisdiction of the towns of Mansalay and San Pedro (Bulalacao)
along the periphery of Southeastern Mindoro
Ø Hanuno means "true," "real" or
"genuine." According to Conklin, when he asked the what kind of
Mangyans they were, the Mangyans' answers to his queries were nothing else but
their claim to be true, real and genuine Mangyans. True enough because among
the Mangyans they have remained faithful to the traditions of their
ancestors.
Ø
The Hanunuos are fairly tall in
structure, and their bodies are slim and well proportioned. They have oblique
eyes, flat nose, prominent cheekbone, flat forehead, and olive skin
Ø Men have their custom of sporting a long braided hair in the upper
part of their head with the rest of their hair cut short, if not shaved. Women
hang up their hair behind their heads, sometimes held in place by a beaded
band, which serves as ornament.
Ø They have a small, even set of teeth caused by their common
practice of filing their teeth while young.
Ø Social life among the Hanunuos revolves around the family
Ø . Mangyan girls marry at an early age. During courtship, a young
man convinces the girl of his intention through the use of ambahan. In between
the recitations, he plays his subing, a three-star guitar. Marriage plans are
done by both parents including the dowry. The actual wedding is short, the
greater part consists of admonitions, and advises dispensed by a magdadniw a
kind of minister

wears a wrap- around cloth and g- string
for male
FORMS OF EDUCATION
Ø Their Forms of education is very low which about 2% only of their
population due to their belief that that education can be best achieved through
experienced and its against to their custom and tradition
Ø Another reason is the economic and social reason aside from
cultural they cannot afford to send
their kids go to school
CULTURE
Mangyans
differ in many ways. In comparison to the technological advance between the two
geographical divisions, the Southern tribes are more advanced as seen in their
use of weaving, pottery and system of writing.
Ø The Northern
tribes, on the other hand, are simpler in their way of living. Their language
just like the whole Philippines came from the Austronesian language family.
However, even if they are defined as one ethnic group the tribes used different
languages.
Ø Mangyan cultural practices are in danger of vanishing because
of the influence of modern lowland culture. The literature and traditions of
the different Mangyan groups are short of documentation; thus, mainstream
society lacks awareness of the beauty of Mangyan culture and its relevance to
Filipino culture as a whole.
The Arts
Ø
Mangyans offers a rich artistic
heritage to the history of pre-colonial
Philippines.
Like any other indigenous tribes in the country their art is an
expression of social relations in their community hence the adage, “Art for
art’s sake” does not apply to them.
Ø
One of their arts is the Ambahan,
a rhythmic poetic expression with a meter of seven syllables presented through
recitation and chanting. A variation of this is the Urukay, wherein
it uses eight syllables instead. There are no authors of the poetry and if one
will ask a Mangyan where he learned the lines of the poem, he’d say it came
from his parents or read and copied it from the bamboo shoots where they
originally write their scripts.
Lets dance....
